When Responsibility Becomes a Comfort Zone

A reflection on self-prioritization, reinvention, and the courage to choose yourself

Last night, we kicked off our first Reinvention Circle of 2026, and I’m still sitting with something that was shared.

We gathered in an open coaching space to talk about what’s really getting in the way of reinvention…not the surface-level stuff, but the deeper patterns that quietly keep us stuck.

And one of the most powerful moments came from a Courage Crew member who spoke with such honesty.

She shared how being a mother, a career woman, and a caretaker in her family often means her own desires and goals get pushed to the back burner. That alone resonated with so many women in the room.

But then she named something deeper.

She wondered out loud if some of those responsibilities — as real and important as they are — might also be functioning as a comfort zone.

That insight landed like a lightning bolt.

The Hidden Cost of Always Being “The Responsible One”

As women (especially women of color and cycle breakers) we are often praised for our strength.

We are the backbone.
The reliable one.
The one who holds it all together.

And while that strength is real, it can quietly turn into a cycle of self-sacrifice.

Not because we don’t care about ourselves.
But because prioritizing others can feel safer than asking the questions that reinvention demands:

  • What do I actually want now?

  • Who am I becoming?

  • What if I started choosing myself?

Sometimes staying busy keeps us from having to answer those questions.

And sometimes the roles we carry, like mother, partner, professional, caretaker… become the very thing that protects us from stepping into the unknown.

Are You Prioritizing Yourself — or Staying Safe?

This is where reinvention often gets stuck.

Not because you lack motivation.
Not because you don’t want change.
But because choosing yourself requires you to step out of familiar identities.

It requires you to make space…not just in your calendar, but in your nervous system and sense of self.

And that can feel terrifying.

So today, I want to invite you to sit with this question gently:

Am I truly prioritizing myself — or am I staying in what feels safe?

If the answer is no, not really, or I’m trying then know that I see you.

Even five minutes of intention counts.
Even small moments of honesty matter.

Reinvention doesn’t begin with drastic action.
It begins with awareness.

Are you prioritizing yourself right now?

Let's take a moment to be honest with ourselves. Because all change starts with truth. Vote below 👇🏾

Why These Conversations Matter Inside The Courage Crew

This moment from the Reinvention Circle is a perfect example of the kind of conversations we have inside The Courage Crew — not just on our monthly calls, but throughout the community.

We don’t rush past the hard truths.
We don’t shame ourselves for where we are.
We slow down and look at what’s really happening beneath the surface.

That’s also why one of the most powerful resources inside the community right now is our Expert Q&A with April Hernández Castillo, where she speaks so honestly about:

  • pursuing your passions

  • navigating motherhood, partnership, and ambition

  • and learning how to wear many hats without losing yourself

It’s not about doing more.
It’s about doing what’s aligned.

A Gentle Invitation Into Your Reinvention

As we move into 2026, I want you to know this:

You don’t need a five-year plan.
You don’t need to have it all figured out.
You don’t need to overhaul your life overnight.

Sometimes reinvention starts with one brave realization.

And sometimes it starts in community.

That’s why we’re also beginning our 30-Day Kickstart Your Reinvention Challenge this Monday inside The Courage Crew…a grounded, supportive way to start the year feeling clear, connected, and activated.

This year, we’re going deeper into what it means to reinvent your life as a woman of color, a cycle breaker, and a woman who is finally ready to choose herself…not instead of others, but alongside them.

You don’t have to do this alone.

And you were never meant to.
